PepsiCo India reaffirms its commitment to build a healthier tomorrow

Reduces salt content by 25 percent in its Lays Classic Salt Potato Chips

New Delhi, December 07, 2010: In line with its global vision of “Making Tomorrow Better Than Today”, PepsiCo India, the country’s leading food & beverage business announced the launch of its Lays Classic Salted Potato Chips with 25 percent less salt. PepsiCo India has been at the forefront of product innovations and initiatives that are driving up the mix of “health and wellness” products in its portfolio. Infact, Pepsico India is the first player in the snacks industry to come up with a salt reduction initiative.

Offering the same great taste, Lays Classic Salted will use microlight salt, a unique high-purity, food grade salt that is finer and well-ground. Lays has been a category leader in the western salty snacks category and Frito Lay has also consistently led the way with healthier options in the market. These include use of Zero trans-fat products, and the recent launch of Aliva baked snacks.

Speaking on the new initiative Mr. Vidur Vyas, Marketing Director - Foods, PepsiCo India said, “The launch of improved Lays Classic Salted with 25% lesser salt is part of PepsiCo’s ‘Performance with Purpose’ agenda and in line with our global commitment to actively work towards addressing nutritional challenges while maintaining the great taste of our products. PepsiCo India Foods has always innovated to provide advantaged, healthier products for our consumers while continuing our emphasis on great taste.”

Health & Wellness at PepsiCo India

Health is becoming increasingly relevant to consumers today and this fact is clearly understood by PepsiCo India Foods. As part of transitioning toward healthier products, PepsiCo India R&D team has undertaken these initiatives:

  • All products are trans-fat free and have carried on-pack voluntary nutritional labeling years before nutritional labeling was mandated recently by Government in 2009.
  • PepsiCo Foods also launched Aliva (range of baked crackers) in 2009.
