PepsiCo India strengthens community partnership, restores 3 water bodies in Sangareddy

  • Inaugurates community water initiative with potential to save 400 million litre of water
  • With increased water availability, farmers can get additional income by planting an extra crop
  • Ranbir Kapoor’s prize money from Kaun Banega Crorepati 2011 to help enrich 7,500 lives

Sangareddy, December 5, 2012: PepsiCo India today announced the successful implementation of its Community Partnership Initiative in Sangareddy. The project interventions revolve round the twin planks, of rain water harvesting for irrigation and value added support through Self Help Groups for water use efficiency and income generation. The ground water recharge project with the potential to recharge 400 million litre of water every year will enrich 7,500 lives in Sangareddy district.

Mr. A. Dinakar Babu, IAS, Collector & District Magistrate – District Medak, inaugurated the project in the presence of PepsiCo India management and community membersat an event organized in village Cherial.

As part of the project, PepsiCo India has restored 3 large defunct ponds and repaired inlets and outlets that will enhance ground water recharge across the 3 villages of Cheriyal, Kashipur and Kotlapur. Due to increased availability of water in non-monsoon months, the farmers can now plant an additional crop thus increasing their income by upto Rs. 15,000 per acre.

Speaking on the project, Mr. Manu Anand, Chairman of PepsiCo India (one of the largest food and beverage businesses in the country) said, "This project will help strengthen connect between plant teams and the local community. Many of our workers hail from the plant neighborhood and by helping the community become more prosperous through water sustainability we will also enhance the commitment of our workers towards PepsiCo.”

He further added, “Promoting water use efficiency within our plants and in communities around them is one of our key planks to sustain and grow our business. We have improved the water use efficiency of our Sangareddy plant from 2.65 litre of water per litre of finished beverage in 2007 to 1.88 litre water per litre of finished beverage in 2011 there by saving 564 million litre of water. We plan extend this knowledge to the communities by training them on optimal management of water resources and better cropping practices.”

Ranbir Kapoor, Bollywood star & Pepsi Brand Ambassador had announced contribution of his winnings from the KBC show (Rs. 12.5 lacs) to PepsiCo India Community Water Program. His contribution has been utilized in the execution of this initiative.

“Indian agriculture being primarily dependent on the monsoon, availability of irrigation water causes millions of farmers to lose the opportunity of putting in an additional crop. Conservation and replenishment of water therefore becomes very critical; an area where PepsiCo has been doing tremendous work. I am very glad that my participation at Kaun Banega Crorepati 2011 has been able to support PepsiCo’s project in Sangareddy that has enriched the lives of villagers. I wish PepsiCo India greater heights and success with this unique project,” said Actor, Ranbir Kapoor.
