Chennai, 19 June, 2008: PepsiCo Foundation today announced its partnership with a local NGO, NAMCO to further strengthen its innovative employability skill development program for the Tsunami affected people in Nagapattinam. The core focus of the project is to rehabilitate the families mainly from the fishermen communities who had lost their belongings and livelihood in the calamity. CAP Foundation, which has been handling the program for the last two and a half years, today handed over their "Enterprise Development Program" activities to NAMCO.
Under the Livelihood Resource Center (LRC) initiative known as "Nallai Namade", PepsiCo Foundation in partnership with CAP foundation has extended support to 1,374 Tsunami affected people in Nagappatinam. The program largely aimed at providing employability training program (ETP), entrepreneurship development program (EDP) and micro enterprise support to these families.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr S Kannan, VP – HR, South Marketing Unit, PepsiCo India said, "Through project Nallai-Namade, it is our endeavor to reach out to the people of Nagapattinam who had lost their family & belongings during Tsunami. Livelihood Resource Center provides diversified livelihood opportunities to these youth & women. To further strengthen the initiative, we are delighted to partner with NAMCO- an NGO in Nagapattinam, which will now be taking the "Enterprise Development Program" forward in the district."
The training is provided in six market driven skill courses - Customer Relations & Sales, Hospitality, Automobile Mechanism, IT Enabled Service, multi-skilled training (electrical & electronics, plumbing, house wiring) and white goods Services, refrigeration and air-conditioning across Nagapattinam district. Together PepsiCo Foundation & CAP Foundation have disbursed a sum total of Rs 24 lakhs as loan to men and women self help groups to assist them in initiating businesses like dairy farming, integrated vegetable cultivation, brick making, marketing of herbal products, coir making, fish pickling till now.
According to Mr Jeevanantham, Founder Secretary, NAMCO, "We are thankful to PepsiCo foundation & CAP foundation to give us the opportunity to join hands with them and to be a part of the "Nallai Namade" project. The program has not only helped in making these families financially independent but has also helped them in regaining their lost confidence and hope of living. We are confident that the partnership will help us reach out to maximum Tsunami affected families in the region and provide them training in various alternative livelihood opportunities."
Further strengthening the LRC program in Nagapattinam, PepsiCo and CAP Foundation, plans to expand the project to other regions as well. The unique partnership plans to start an Employability center at Chennai & Sangareddy in Andhra Pradesh to cater to 1400 candidates every year.
