February 12 2008 Hyderabad: Strengthening its commitment to “Performance with Purpose” PepsiCo India today announced a series of initiatives in Andhra Pradesh. The initiatives include inauguration of a Waste to Wealth project Livelihood Resource Centre (LRC) and financial support to a water management initiative in Malkapur village thus demonstrating a unique partnership between Government NGO and the corporate sector with people’s participation. PepsiCo India will be investing a sum of over Rs. 30 lakhs in the three projects.
With an aim to make Sangareddy district cleaner greener and garbage free PepsiCo India in partnership with Exnora & Sangareddy Municipality is setting up a Waste to Wealth program the sixth such project in the country after the successful rollout of similar projects in other parts of northern and southern India. This unique initiative at Sangareddy will be executed with people’s participation through motivation and awareness generation activities.
Speaking on the Waste to Wealth initiative Sanjay Warke Executive Director Southern Marketing Unit PepsiCo India said “PepsiCo India is committed to "Performance with Purpose" -- to being a company that is good for society and creating a tomorrow better than today. Specifically in the area of Environmental Sustainability PepsiCo India is engaged in a wide range of initiatives aimed at protecting the environment. We are delighted to contribute towards supporting the Sangareddy community to manage domestic solid waste in an environmental friendly manner in partnership with Sangareddy Municipality and Exnora.” He further added “The first phase of the project will target 10 wards impacting a population of around 20 000 people.”
The programme was initiated and implemented in Pammal Municipal Corporation Kancheepuram District in 2005. PepsiCo Foundation and PepsiCo India jointly has funded all the projects in Pammal Nagapatinam Cudalore & Tenkasi Municipalities of Tamil Nadu & Panipat Municipality of Haryana with a total grant of over Rs 99 lakhs. PepsiCo has funded a sum of Rs 19 lakhs for the construction of Zero Waste Centre in Sangareddy.
The PepsiCo-Exnora ZWM project in Pammal has also been recognized as a model project and centre for International learning by UNICEF in September 2007.
The Livelihood Resource Center (LRC) is an innovative employment skill development initiative by PepsiCo foundation in association with CAP foundation. The initiative aims at facilitating alternative livelihood to the rural youth living below poverty line between the age group of 18-35 years by extending training in Customer Relations & Hospitality Management Courses with spoken English and computer education. PepsiCo India has invested a sum of Rs. 3 80 000/- in the program.
Speaking on the LRC initiative Mr. Warke said “Livelihood Resource Centre is a project aimed to give alternative livelihood opportunities to the rural youth of the region living below the poverty line. The success of our LRC projects in the past has given us immense confidence to take the initiative forward to other regions and we are extremely delighted to inaugurate the program in Sangareddy. We will be providing training and employment opportunities to more than 200 rural youth in the region in the year 2008.”
PepsiCo India has also funded Malkapur village for a water supply project providing financial support of Rs. 9.4 Lakhs to the district for a water contract with the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board (HMWSSB).
Due to insufficient quantitiy of drinking water in the village the Malkapur Panchayat and the MP of the constituency had reached out to the HMWSSB for a water contract under which the later will be supplying drinking water to the district. PepsiCo India will be funding 75% of the total project cost of Rs. 12.5 lakhs.
